The common terminology of PM stepper motor

In stepper motors, there are some terms that may be more difficult to understand for those who are new to the Stepper Motor industry. Today, the editor will briefly summarize them for your reference.

Step angle:
The rotation produced by the rotor at each step is measured in degrees.

The angle at which the rotor rotates every time the motor receives a pulse. For a linear motor, the step is a linear distance.

Rotation steps per week:
The total number of steps required for the rotor to rotate 360°. The sum of the resistance moment and the moment of inertia.

The sum of the resistance moment and the moment of inertia.

PULL IN (draw in) torque:
It overcomes the acceleration torque of the rotor inertia, and the external load and various friction torques fixedly connected during acceleration. Therefore, the pull-in torque is usually less than the pull-out torque.

PULL OUT torque:
The maximum torque that the motor can produce at a constant speed. Because the speed is constant, there is no moment of inertia. The kinetic energy and inertial load inside the rotor increase the pull-out torque during the cycle.

Positioning or residual torque:
The torque required to rotate the output of the motor when no current flows through the windings.

Torque to inertia ratio:
The holding torque is divided by the rotor moment of inertia.

Dynamic torque:
The torque produced by the motor at a certain step rate. Dynamic torque can be represented by PULL IN (draw in) moment or PULL OUT (draw out) moment.

Holding torque:
When the winding is supplied with steady-state direct current, the torque required to make the motor rotate on the output shaft.

An electrical control device used to run a Stepper motor. This includes power supplies, logic programmers, switching elements, and a variable frequency pulse source that determines the step rate.

The inertial measurement value of an object's acceleration or deceleration. It is used here to refer to the inertia of the load to be moved by the motor, or the inertia of the rotor of a stepper motor.

Linear step increment (or step length):
The linear displacement produced by the lead screw every time the rotor rotates one step angle.

Pulse rate:
The number of pulses applied to the motor windings per second (PPS). The pulse rate is equal to the motor step rate.

Pulses per second (PPS):
The number of steps produced by the motor in one second (sometimes called "steps per second"). This is determined by the pulse frequency generated by the motor driver.

Lifting speed:
In the case that the motor does not lose step, the given load is increased from the original low step rate to the maximum, and then reduced to the original rate.

Single step response:
The time required for the motor to perform a complete step.

Maximum temperature rise:
The designed motor allows temperature rise. The temperature rise of the motor is an inherent characteristic of the increase in temperature when the motor is energized. Electric energy loss mainly includes resistance heating (copper loss), iron loss and friction loss. The temperature of the motor is the sum of the total loss heating temperature and the ambient temperature.
