Speaking of altitude sickness, we are all familiar with it. Many people will experience altitude sickness when going to higher altitudes. Motors are no exception. Have you ever heard of altitude sickness caused by electric motors? What measures should we take to adjust the altitude sickness?


1. The main characteristics of plateau areas are

1. The air pressure or air density is small.
2. The air temperature is low and the temperature changes greatly.
3. The absolute humidity of the air is small.
4. High solar radiation illuminance.

The oxygen content of the air at 5000m is only 53% of the oxygen content of sea level air.

What are the symptoms of ordinary motors running in plateau environment?

The high altitude, low air pressure, lack of oxygen, high cold, large temperature difference, and large wind and sand in the plateau environment are extremely severe tests for the ventilation and heat dissipation conditions, insulation and protection of the motor. If the ordinary motor is directly applied to the plateau environment, it may be burned out or malfunction frequently due to the deterioration of operating conditions.


2. What is the effect of altitude on the motor?

Altitude has an adverse effect on motor temperature rise, motor corona (high voltage motor) and commutation of Dc motor.

The following three aspects should be noted:

(1) At high altitude, the greater the temperature rise of the motor, the lower the output power. But when the temperature decreases with the increase in altitude enough to compensate for the influence of altitude on temperature rise, the rated output power of the motor can be unchanged;
(2) Anti-corona measures should be taken when high-voltage motors are used on plateaus;
(3) The altitude is unfavorable for the commutation of the DC motor. Pay attention to the selection of carbon brush materials.


3. Plateau Motor

Plateau motor: refers to the motor whose altitude is higher than 1000 meters. According to the national industry standard: JB/T7573-94 General technical conditions for electrical products under plateau environmental conditions, plateau motors are divided into many levels: they are no more than 2000 meters, 3000 meters, 4000 meters, and 5000 meters.

The plateau operates at high altitudes, due to low air pressure, poor heat dissipation conditions, and losses will increase and operating efficiency will decrease. Therefore, the same, the rated electromagnetic load and heat dissipation design of motors operating at different altitudes are different. For motors that are not high altitude specifications, it is best to reduce the load appropriately. Otherwise, the life and performance of the motor will be affected, and even burn out in a short time.

4. The breakdown voltage of the electrical gap decreases, so the electrical gap should be increased according to the altitude.
5. Cause the insulation strength to decrease: for every 1000 meters, the insulation strength will decrease by 8-15%.
6. The cooling effect of air medium decreases, the heat dissipation capacity decreases, and the temperature rise increases. For every 1000M increase, the temperature rise will increase by 3-10%, so the temperature rise limit must be revised.
